Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon led 16 Big 12 players on the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, which was released on Wednesday.
Gordon, who won this award last year along with the Doak Walker Award, returns to the Cowboys after he led the nation with 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns. He opted to return for one more season in Stillwater to play for a team that has a chance to win the Big 12 Championship and earn the league’s berth in the expanded College Football Playoff.
Â
The other Big 12 players selected to the watch list included Kansas wide receiver Lawrence Arnold, Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks, TCU tight end Drake Dabney, Baylor quarterback Dequan Finn, TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, Texas Tech wide receiver Josh Kelly, UCF center Caden Kitler, Utah tight end Brant Kuithe, BYU running back L J Martin, Arizona State running back Alton McCaskill, Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Houston quarterback Donovan Smith, Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and TCU wide receiver Savion Williams.
Brooks is another serious candidate for the award. Like Gordon, he opted not to go to the NFL after he rushed for more than 1,500 yards in 2023.
The award is named for the former Texas Longhorns legend, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 and went on to a NFL career that led to his induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Because the award is named for Campbell and because of his Texas roots, the award is given each year to the best Division I player who played football at and graduated from a Texas high school and/or currently playing at a Texas Division 1 four-year college.
