The Minnesota Vikings are not planning to use the franchise tag on Sam Darnold, which means he’ll hit the open market and become a free agent. The Vikings could still re-sign him and ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reports the Vikings are “still working to re-sign” the 2024 Pro Bowl QB. Yet, if Darnold leaves, where should the soon-to-be 28-year-old sign?
New York Jets

The New York Jets’ biggest attraction is the fact that they have a three-time 1,000-yard receiver in Garrett Wilson. But Darnold has already done this before, trying to play in the New York market. Only, this time Darnold arrives as a proven QB instead of a young rookie trying to make his mark. It’s hard to see Darnold wanting to play for the Jets again, they’d likely have to come in with the best contract offer.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have had a top-17 offense for both of Shane Steichen’s seasons as head coach. It’s an impressive feat considering they haven’t had consistent quarterback play. Darnold would get to play for a bright offensive mind and do it indoors at Lucas Oil Stadium. Yet, do the Colts have enough weapons to help him thrive? They may just be missing a highly capable QB.

New York Giants

The Giants could become one of the most aggressive teams in free agency when it comes to chasing after Darnold. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are entering their fourth season together and after a three-win season, both are on the hot seat. This means the Giants will be itching to scratch out a few wins and Darnold, paired with Malik Nabers, could be just enough to get the job done.

Las Vegas Raiders

Having Tom Brady as a minority owner/close confidant could help make the Raiders a more attractive landing spot. But really, the Raiders are a favorable landing spot because they have Brock Bowers, one of the best tight ends in the NFL. They also have the benefit of playing their home games indoors, even if it means going up against the Chiefs twice per year.

Pittsburgh Steelers

We already know Mike Tomlin will lead a competitive effort, as he has for the past 18 seasons in a row. What if the Steelers can upgrade from Russell Wilson and Justin Fields? Darnold could be attracted by the strong leadership in Pittsburgh and having George Pickens to target won’t hurt either. Yet, will the Steelers be willing to pony up the cash?
