Sabalenka, Ruud Reach French Open Second Round

Two-time Major winner Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday, defeating Erika Andreeva 6-1, 6-2.

Needing one hour and eight minutes to advance, Sabalenka struck 27 winners, hit one ace and broke the serve of her No. 100th ranked opponent on five occasions.

Reaching the finals in both Madrid and Italian Open recently, Sabalenka will next face either Irene Burillo Escorihuela or Moyuka Uchijima for a place in round three.

Cornet Retires at French Open

Elsewhere, French star Alize Cornet played her final match at Roland Garros, losing to Qinwen Zheng from China 6-2, 6-1.

Cornet, who reached the fourth round or better at every Grand Slam, played her final match. The 34-year-old reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 Australian Open as her best career Major result.

Other results on the day saw No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina steamroll Greet Minnen 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round.

Rybakina, who is always a handful for any player in the draw, will next face Arantxa Rus. Rus ousted Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-3.

Ruud Reaches Round Two

Norwegian star Casper Ruud advanced to the second round of Roland Garros on Tuesday, ousting Felipe Alves 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

The No. 7 seed, who is a two-time defending finalist in the event, entered Paris with a 17-4 clay-court record.

He recently captured the Geneva Open over the weekend, and the Barcelona title earlier this year. Ruud will next face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Other results on the day saw No. 11 seed Alex de Minaur, No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 28 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry all advancing to the round of 64.
