Sinner, Gauff Reach French Open Fourth Round
Reigning Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner progressed to the fourth round of the French Open on Friday, dispatching Pavel Kotov 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Needing two hours and 27 minutes to advance, Sinner slammed four aces, hit 36 winners and broke the serve of his Russian opponent on three occasions.
Sinner will next face Corentin Moutet or Sebastian Ofner for a place in the quarterfinals. The Italian star can overtake Novak Djokovic for the world No. 1 ranking if he reaches the final.
Elsewhere, Matteo Arnaldi upset No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev 7-6(8), 6-2, 6-4.
Danilovic Advances to Round Four
Olga Danilovic continued her dream run at Roland Garros on Friday, overcoming Donna Vekic 0-6, 7-5, 7-6(8) to advance to the fourth round.
In a match that lasted three hours and eight minutes, Danilovic used her powerful serve to hit four aces.
The 23-year-old will next face either No. 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova or Chloe Paquet.
No. 3 seed Coco Gauff raced into the fourth round with a straight set victory over No. 30 seed Dayana Yastremska, while No. 17 seed Liudmila Samsonova was dismissed by Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-6(4), 6-2.
Saturday’s action at the French Open will feature top seed Novak Djokovic, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.
