The Darien (Conn.) girls’ lacrosse team has had a rich seam of form the last two decades under head coach Lisa Lindsey.
Part of that form is the fact that the Blue Wave had won 12 games in a row against their league and county rival, New Canaan (Conn.) between 2013 and 2019.
Since the end of the pandemic, however, New Canaan leads the series with seven wins and a draw in 13 matches. Yesterday’s 10-5 win over Darien in the CIAC Class LL final was a reflection of the Fairfield County final a mere three weeks ago which saw the Rams win 7-2.
Why was yesterday a reflection of that result? Consider that the Rams held a 7-2 lead in the second half, one which they held onto for the balance of regulation.
New Canaan’s stellar defense and goaltending was able to flummox the Darien attack, one which has played stellar lacrosse all season.
One can say that, at least for now, the Route 124 Derby is tilted ever so slightly towards the north of the five-mile road between the two communities.
