The 2024 Wimbledon draw is out. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will play in the same half, while Novak Djokovic looks set to play after his knee surgery three weeks ago.
Alcaraz, who defeated Novak Djokovic in last year’s final and recently overcame Sinner at Roland Garros, is pursuing his fourth major title. The Spaniard could face Ugo Humbert in the fourth round and either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.
Sinner, ranked No. 1, opens against Yannick Hanfmann and may encounter former finalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round, with potential fourth-round and quarter-final matches against Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev, respectively.
Second seed Novak Djokovic starts against qualifier Vit Kopriva and might face Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round, Holger Rune in the fourth round, and Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.
Djokovic, aiming for his eighth Wimbledon title, could meet Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals. Zverev, with a challenging path, is projected to face Taylor Fritz in the fourth round and Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals.
Andy Murray, the victim of a Simon Briggs / Telegraph article claiming he wouldn’t be playing due to back surgery, has so far not withdrawn and faces Tomas Machac in the first round in what is likely his last Wimbledon.

Thoughts on the Draw

Top Quarter
Seeded players: Jannik Sinner (1), Daniil Medvedev (5), Grigor Dimitrov (10), Ben Shelton (14), Nicolas Jarry (19), Adrian Mannarino (22), Tallon Griekspoor (27), Zhizhen Zhang (32)
Likely Quarter-Final: Jannik Sinner vs Grigor Dimitrov
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is targeting his second Grand Slam title of 2024 at Wimbledon, bolstered by his recent victory in Halle, his first grass-court title.
Sinner begins his campaign against Yannick Hanfmann in the first round but faces a potential early test in the second round against Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up and recent finalist at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart.
Berrettini’s prowess on grass could pose a significant challenge, but I think Sinner’s movement and how the grass plays these days at SW19 puts things in his favour.
After that, his path to the fourth round looks smoother. In the fourth round, he is expected to encounter 14th seed Ben Shelton, though Nicolas Jarry and Denis Shapovalov are potential threats.
Daniil Medvedev, the fifth seed and 2023 Wimbledon semifinalist, is on the opposite side of this quarter. Despite an early exit at Halle, Medvedev is more than capable, but his game has looked lacking this season, with his serve broken too readily.
Medvedev’s tournament starts against Aleksandar Kovacevic. He has a straightforward route to the third round, where he is projected to face Zhang Zhizhen in a rematch from Halle.
In the fourth round, Medvedev will likely face tenth seed Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian’s strong performances on grass and solid 2024 season make an upset not too unlikely.
Should Sinner and Dimitrov clash in the last eight, their previous encounter at the Miami Open suggests the Italian looks set to make the semi-finals. Alcaraz is his seeded opponent, and that one is anyone’s guess.
Sinner’s Path to the Title:
- First Round: Yannick Hanfmann
- Second Round: Matteo Berrettini
- Third Round: Tallon Griekspoor (27)
- Fourth Round: Ben Shelton (14)
- Quarterfinal: Daniil Medvedev (5) / Grigor Dimitrov (10)
- Semifinal: Carlos Alcaraz (3)
- Final: Novak Djokovic (2) / Alexander Zverev (4)
Second Quarter
Seeded players: Carlos Alcaraz (3), Casper Ruud (8), Tommy Paul (12), Ugo Humber (16), Sebastian Baez (18), Alexander Bublik (23), Frances Tiafoe (29), Mariano Navone (31)
Likely Quarter Final: Carlos Alcaraz (3) vs Tommy Paul (12)
Carlos Alcaraz begins his Wimbledon title defence against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal. Despite an early exit at the Queen’s Club Championships, the Spaniard will likely rebound strongly at Wimbledon.
The French Open champion has a comfortable draw until the fourth round when he will likely face 16th seed Ugo Humbert, whose game is well-suited to grass.
On the other side of this quarter lies eighth seed Casper Ruud, who has historically struggled on grass. Despite his impressive form in recent months, I’d pick Tommy Paul, one of the best movers on tour, to make the quarter-finals in place of the Norwegian.
A quarterfinal clash between Paul and Alcaraz could be one of the matches of the tournament. It’s a fun matchup, especially if the American brings his Tim Henman-esque tactics to the court.
Alcaraz’s Path to the Title:
- First Round: Mark Lajal (Q)
- Second Round: Aleksandar Vukic / Sebastian Ofner
- Third Round: Frances Tiafoe
- Fourth Round: Ugo Humbert (16)
- Quarterfinal: Casper Ruud (8) / Tommy Paul (12)
- Semifinal: Jannik Sinner (1) / Daniil Medvedev (5)
- Final: Novak Djokovic (2) / Alexander Zverev (4)
Third Quarter
Seeded players: Alexander Zverev (4), Andrey Rublev (6), Stefanos Tsitsipas (11), Taylor Fritz (13), Sebastian Korda (20), Alejandro Tabilo (24), Lorenzo Musetti (25), Jack Draper (28)
Likely quarter-final: Lorenzo Musetti (25) vs Alexander Zverev (4)
On paper, this quarter of the draw is one of the most open, with several players having a realistic shot at reaching the quarterfinals.
Fourth seed Alexander Zverev will be looking to rebound from his final defeat in the French Open with a strong performance.
The German enters the tournament after a semifinal run at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. He always looks capable on grass, troubling Federer a few years ago, but he’s yet to make it past the fourth round at SW19.
Zverev has a reasonably smooth ride through the first two rounds before a potential third-round clash with Jack Draper, who won Stuttgart and defeated Alcaraz at Queen’s thanks to his big lefty game.
On the other side of this quarter is sixth seed Andrey Rublev, who reached the quarterfinals last year but has a potentially tricky third-round match against 25th seed Lorenzo Musetti, who I think will come through.
Zverev’s Path to the Title:
- First Round: Roberto Carballes Baena
- Second Round: Marcos Giron
- Third Round: Jack Draper (28)
- Fourth Round: Taylor Fritz (13)
- Quarterfinal: Andrey Rublev (6) / Stefanos Tsitspas (11) / Sebastian Korda (20) / Lorenzo Musetti (25)
- Semifinal: Novak Djokovic (2)
- Final: Jannik Sinner (1) / Carlos Alcaraz (3)
Bottom Quarter
Seeded players: Novak Djokovic (2), Hubert Hurkacz (7), Alex de Minaur (9), Holger Rune (15), Felix Auger-Aliassime (17), Karen Khachanov (21), Francisco Cerundolo (26), Tomas Martin Etcheverry (30)
Likely quarter-final: Alex de Minaur (9) vs Nokav Djokovic (1)
Novak Djokovic enters Wimbledon after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus three weeks ago.
That sounds like a premature comeback, but the procedure is known to be quick-recovery, and Taylor Fritz was able to play at Wimbledon in 2021 after receiving the same treatment just 14 days earlier.
The Serb hasn’t clinched a title this year, so his quest for a historic 25th Grand Slam won’t be straightforward. But Djokovic is one of the best post-2001 grass players ever, and he’s got a decent enough draw.
First up is Vit Kopriva, who defeated veteran Richard Gasquet in the final qualifying round to secure his place in the main draw of a Major for the second time. Despite having a top-10 win under his belt, he’s unlikely to threaten Djokovic on grass seriously.
In round two, it’s either Jacob Fearnley or Alejandro Moro Canas. They are either British wildcards or qualifiers, which should be easy pickings.
Djokovic could encounter Etcheverry in the third round if the seeds hold up. However, Argentines on grass aren’t typically anything to write home about. Luca Nardi, who ousted Djokovic from the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year, could also be a contender, but none of this section has pedigree on grass.
For the fourth round, the competition gets a bit more interesting, with Holger Rune or Khachanov as the seeded players.
Rune is experiencing a rough patch, but he did make the quarter-finals last year, and we know at Wimbledon, the grass allows more of a rally-based baseline game. Khachanov also has a Wimbledon quarter-final on his CV.
In the last eight, Hurkacz and de Minaur are two likely opponents. De Minaur kicked off his grass swing by winning the Libema Open, and the Australian is having a career-best season, so a rematch could be close.
Hurkacz made the final of his only grass-court tournament in Halle and is a former Wimbledon semifinalist. Although he has lost all seven previous encounters against Djokovic, he remains a threat on grass with his serve.
For the semi-finals, Zverev is the fourth seed, but Wimbledon is the only Major where he hasn’t been past the fourth round, so despite his solid form this year, his appearance in the last four seems a long shot.
Should Zverev or Fritz falter, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, and Lorenzo Musetti are potential semifinalists. Of these three, only Tsitsipas has reached beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.
Djokovic won’t face his biggest threats until the final, as Alcaraz and Sinner are in the other half.
The Spaniard ended Djokovic’s four-year reign at Wimbledon in a five-set thriller last year and recently won the French Open to claim his third Grand Slam title.
Sinner, the tour’s most in-form player this year, recently ascended to the top of the rankings and won his fourth title of the season in Halle. He made the Wimbledon semifinals last year, losing to Djokovic in straight sets.
Djokovic’s Path to the Title:
- First Round: Vít Kopřiva (Q)
- Second Round: Jacob Fearnley (WC) / Alejandro Moro Cañas (Q)
- Third Round: Tomas Martin Etcheverry (30)
- Fourth Round: Holger Rune (15) / Karen Khachanov (21)
- Quarterfinal: Hubert Hurkacz (7) / Alex de Minaur (9)
- Semifinal: Alexander Zverev (4)
- Final: Jannik Sinner (1) / Carlos Alcaraz (3)
