SMU lost a Top247 quarterback commit in Keelon Russell during June, but they gained one at the start of July. Bradenton (FL.) IMG Academy quarterback Ty Hawkins announced his commitment to the Mustangs flipping from rival TCU. Hawkins had been committed to the Horned Frogs for a year, but a late June visit to SMU changed the complexion of his recruitment.
At 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Hawkins is ranked as the No. 15 quarterback in the nation and No. 29 overall prospect in Florida, according to 247Sports.
Hawkins tells 247Sports that quarterback coach D’Eriq King and head coach Rhett Lashlee played a big role in the flip. Known for their wide open offense, Hawkins saw an opportunity to make an impact early on.
