The Big 12 Doesn’t Have a Top 40 Game in 2024 Season

The competition for the Big 12 Championship will be fierce in 2024, and while the league doesn’t appear to have a national championship favorite to begin the year, it has several teams vying for the conference crown.

Kelley Ford, creator of the KFord Ratings, measured teams’ watchability over the course of the 2024 season earlier this week, and the league actually fared pretty well.

A team’s watchability is simply a combination of the quality of its opponents and the competitiveness of its weekly games.

Three of the five most watchable teams in the country, on a week-to-week basis, were from the Big 12.

  1. USC (8.77)
  2. Florida (8.49)
  3. Oklahoma State (8.24)
  4. West Virginia (8.22)
  5. Colorado (8.20)

However, when it comes to the single-most watchable games of the year, the Big 12 didn’t do well at all.

According to Ford, there’s not a single game involving a Big 12 team that ranks among the 40 most-watchable games of the 2024 season.

There is a caveat worth mentioning here, though, as these kinds of ratings can be misconstrued. These ratings aren’t necessarily indicative of a game’s television ratings, but more so about how competitive the game is expected to be and how evenly matched the teams should be.

For example, one of the most argued omissions on the list is Ohio State vs. Michigan. However, Michigan is expected to be down in 2024 and the Buckeyes are currently favored by 9.5 points.

So, it appears that the key to success here is a combination of at least one title contender and it being a highly competitive game.

Could games like Utah at Oklahoma State and Arizona at Kansas State provide some of the best games of the season?

Absolutely.

Are any of those teams in the top 15 when it comes to national title odds?

Nope.
