The 2024 edition of the Wells Fargo Championship once again takes place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, starting on Thursday, May 9. Though world #1 Scottie Scheffler isn’t in the field, the starters list is still stacked with top players, including 12 of the top 15 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Three-time champion Rory McIlroy headlines the participants and is also the betting favorite, listed at +650 to win his record-extending fourth title at Quail Hollow.

Max Homa won the event in 2022 but note that it was held at a different course that year (TPC Potomac in Maryland). That marked just the second time in the tournament’s 20-year history that it wasn’t held at Quail Hollow. The other came in 2017, when Brian Harman won at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC.
McIlroy Not Having a Great Season (So Far)
World #2 Rory McIlroy started 2024 strong, notching a win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and a T2 at the Dubai Invitational, both on the DP World Tour. But his results in 2024 PGA events have been much less auspicious. In eight tournaments, McIlroy only has one top-20 finish: a third-place at the Valero Texas Open. On the bright side, he hasn’t missed a cut, but the 35-year-old Ulsterman can’t be satisfied with his season to date, sitting 20th on tour in strokes gained.
While the three-time Wells Fargo-winner has obviously had his share of success at Quail Hollow, McIlroy finished just T47 at the 2023 edition, which was won in a runaway by Wyndham Clark, who’s -19 score was four strokes clear of the field.
Clark has had an up-and-down start to 2024, but the highs have been extremely high. Clark has already won AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, finished second at both THE PLAYERS and the Arnold Palmer, and third at the RBC Heritage last time out. But he’s also missed the cut twice, including at The Masters. He currently sits second to Scheffler in strokes gained in 2024, though it’s a distant second (2.851 vs 1.780).
Schauffele Playing Well and Has Strong History at Quail Hollow
World #3 Xander Schauffele finished runner-up to Clark at the 2023 Wells Fargo and was T14 in 2021. He hasn’t won any of his ten starts in 2024 but he also hasn’t missed a cut and has seven top-ten finishes in those ten events. He is currently third behind Scheffler and Clark in strokes gained, fractionally trailing the latter. He managed a T18 last time out at the RBC Heritage.
His only other two starts at the Wells Fargo were a T24 in 2017 and a T72 in 2018, meaning he’s made the cut in all five of his starts at the tournament.
Wells Fargo Championship Predictions
Schauffele’s 2024 track record is hard to ignore. Outside of Scheffler, he’s been the most-consistent player on tour this season, finishing top ten in 70% of his tournaments so far. Add in his strong history at Quail Hollow and I like the American in his head-to-head matchup with three-time winner Rory McIlroy who, as mentioned, is just 20th in strokes gained during the 2024 PGA season.
I am also going to ride with Clark in his head-to-head matchup with Max Homa. Homa’s win at the Wells Fargo came at a different course and, while his finished T8 here last year, he missed the cut in 2021 and isn’t in particularly good form in 2024. He has two top-ten finishes in ten tournaments along with a missed cut. He currently sits a thoroughly pedestrian 48th in strokes gained and has already dropped three spots (from 7th to 10th) in the OWGR since the end of 2023.
Wells Fargo Championship 2024 picks:
- Schauffele (+105) over McIlroyÂ
- Clark (-130) over Homa
