In a wild turn of events, ex-commentator Thom Brennaman is getting back into the play-by-play business by calling games for the ACC and the Pac-12 on CW Network.
Brennaman, a former broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds, was fired after using inappropriate slurs and homophobic language live on air.
“There are no words to describe how grateful I am that they’re rolling the dice,” Brennaman told The Athletic. “They don’t have to do this.”
Brennaman’s historic lapse came on August 19, 2020, during the first game of a doubleheader between the Cincinnati Reds and the Kansas City Royals. Brennaman’s mic was hot during what was believed to be a commercial break, where the Reds broadcaster referred to the city of San Francisco as, “one of the f** capitals of the world.”
While the moment signaled the end of Brennaman’s MLB broadcasting career, it also gave birth to an internet meme for Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos, who has hit notable homeruns following historically bad moments in American history, one of which during Brennaman’s apology on air.
Thom Brennaman will make his return to the broadcasting booth on Saturday, August 31st when Oregon State gets set to take on Idaho State as the start of the 2024 college football season.
