The Portland Trail Blazers had low expectations in the 2023-24 NBA season, and in most fans’ minds, they probably failed to even meet those low expectations after going 21-61 and finishing with the worst record in the Western Conference.
A season like that creates a lot of questions and uncertainties heading into the offseason, and one of those uncertainties could be head coach Chauncey Billups’ job security.
According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, NBA teams are monitoring Billups’ situation in Portland to see if the two parties decide to part ways, via NBACentral.

Billups has been a coveted coaching candidate in the past before signing with Portland, and now the Blazers don’t have a path to being in contention for quite a while and the franchise could elect to get a fresh voice in town to lead them into the next era.
A fresh start could be best for both Billups and the Blazers and if so, Mannix said that he would quickly become a hot candidate for other coaching positions around the league.
Billups has gone 81-165 in his three years with the Blazers and is trending down after trading Damian Lillard this past offseason to hand the keys to No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson, who had a rough rookie season.
Portland could benefit from wiping the slate clean, and it’s possible Billups gets head coaching interviews elsewhere, but he also might not due to his lack of success in Portland.
If he’s hired as an assistant elsewhere, he immediately becomes one of the best assistants in the league.
