Marvel Studios hasn’t made the trip to Hall H at San Diego Comic Con in quite some time, but the entertainment giant returned to California on Saturday to regale fans with news about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects in the works.
Films like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, the new Fantastic Four film and the next two Avengers films made waves with exciting news for fans who want to know what’s coming next in the series.
While none of these films are due this year (only Deadpool & Wolverine was slated for 2024), you’ll get to learn more about these anticipated sequels as soon as you scroll down.
Let’s see what’s in store for the MCU, including the return of a major actor in a new role.
After being teased as a villain in the Captain America: Brave New World trailer (above), actor Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian) revealed to the Comic Con crowd that he’ll be playing Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, a member of the Serpent Society in the comics.
Speaking of the new Captain America film, Hollywood legend Harrison Ford is joining the MCU as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who turns into the Red Hulk in the movie.
Ford did his Red Hulk roar for the crowd and explained why he wanted to join the franchise.
Variety’s Jordan Moreau and Zack Sharif shared what the new Captain America film’s plot, reportedly focused on the giant Celestial being Tiamut that crash landed to Earth in 2021’s Eternals.
“The new footage from Captain America: Brave New World that played in Hall H began with Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross, who is now the U.S. president, addressing the ending events of Eternals at an event with world leaders that’s called the Celestial Island Summit,” the duo’s report read. “It turns out Adamantium has been discovered in the ruins of where a dead Celestial appeared in the ocean and is now the most valuable element on the planet. Ross is recruiting Sam Wilson/Captain America to build a new Avengers team, but not all will go according to plan.”
The MCU’s iteration of The Fantastic Four will now be called The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The movie due out on July 25, 2025, and stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvels’ first family.
Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino will be doing the score for the movie, too.
The superhero team’s Fantasticar also made a Hall H debut.
Marvel Studios confirmed for fans on Saturday night the news that MCU veterans Joe and Anthony Russo would be directing the next two Avengers projects, returning for the first time since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
The fifth Avengers film is now titled Avengers: Doomsday, and it’s due out May 1, 2026.
The sixth Avengers film will be called Avengers: Secret Wars, and it’s due out May 7, 2027.
After Iron Man made his heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, we thought Robert Downey Jr. had made his MCU farewell. Apparently not!
The Oscar-winning actor will now return to Marvel as the infamous Dr. Doom, most likely coming from another timeline in the multiverse. He’ll appear in both of the upcoming Avengers films in 2026 and 2027.
