The Wells Fargo Championship takes center stage at Quail Hollow Club, a traditional PGA Tour event located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Positioned just before the PGA Championship, it’s no coincidence that many top players participate, aiming to succeed Wyndham Clark, the 2023 winner.
Wells Fargo Championship, schedule
Rory McIlroy is a prime candidate for victory here, having consistently performed well at this venue. Notably, he is the only player to have won three times— in 2010, 2015, and 2021.
While he cannot realistically chase the number 1 spot (Scottie Scheffler is currently too far ahead), most experts agree that the main contenders are McIlroy and Clark. Identifying underdogs in such a competitive field is challenging.
Max Homa, a two-time winner, could be considered one, but with the highly qualified field, the event promises to be entertaining regardless. Players like Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele are all set to compete, aiming to make the most of the 7,547-yard, par 71 course.
Quail Hollow Club has its own share of history too. It hosted the Kemper Open from 1969 to 1979. In a twist of events, the 2022 Presidents Cup was held here, necessitating the relocation of the Wells Fargo Championship to Potomac, Maryland.
The course is famous for its challenging final stretch known as the “Green Mile.” Organized by Champions for Education, the tournament also serves a charitable purpose through its support of Teach for America. Born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy is a professional golfer who quickly made a name for himself in the world of golf.
As a youth, he demonstrated considerable talent, first in amateur competitions where he won the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004, competed in the Walker Cup in 2007, represented Ireland at the Eisenhower Trophy in 2006, and secured five tournament victories including the European Amateur Championship in 2006 and the European Amateur Team Championship in 2007.
McIlroy turned professional at the age of 18 in September 2007. He achieved his first victory on the European PGA Tour at the Dubai Desert Classic in February 2009, followed by his first win on the American circuit at the Quail Hollow Championship in 2010.
After securing third places in major tournaments at the 2009 PGA Championship and the 2010 Masters, McIlroy clinched his first Grand Slam title at the 2011 U.S. Open. McIlroy first reached the top of the world rankings on March 4, 2012, at just 22 years and 43 days old, shortly after winning the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens.
On August 12, 2012, he became the first Northern Irishman in history to win the PGA Championship, and the first Briton to do so since Tommy Armour in 1930. In 2014, McIlroy won his third major by claiming the British Open, followed by a fourth major win at the PGA Championship later that year.
Additionally, in the same year, he contributed to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the United States, marking his second consecutive win in this prestigious team competition.
