Djokovic, Alcaraz Reach Olympic Quarterfinals

Top seed Novak Djokovic and No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz raced into the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games on Wednesday in Paris, France.

First up, Djokovic needed one hour and 37 minutes to oust Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-3. Slamming 19 winners and five aces, Djokovic will next face No. 8 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas for a place in the semifinals.

Tsitsipas dismissed No. 12 seed Sebastian Baez 7-5, 6-1.

Djokovic leads his head-to-head meeting with Tsitsipas at 11-2.

Elsewhere, reigning French Open and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz recorded a clean-cut 6-4, 6-2 victory over Roman Safiullin.

Alcaraz, who is looking to become the youngest Olympic Gold medal winner in tennis, will next face No. 9 seed Tommy Paul for a semifinal birth.

Paul broke the hearts of local fans after dispatching Frenchman Corentin Moutet 7-6(6), 6-3.

Other winners on the day saw inform Italian Lorenzo Musetti oust No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-5.

Schmiedlova Defeats Wimbledon Champion

Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova shocked reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, defeating the No. 9 seed 6-4, 6-2.

Needing one hour and 29 minutes to advance, Schmiedlova hit 16 winner and broke serve on two occasions.

The Slovakian will next face No. 12 seed Marta Kostyuk or No. 13 seed Donna Vekic for a place in the finals.

Still to come Wednesday, top seed Iga Swiatek will face No. 8 seed Danielle Collins and No. 6 seed Qinwen Zheng takes on Angelique Kerber.

Kerber will be playing in the final event of her career in Paris.
