In a recent interview with Kansas City Sports Networks’ Verbal Commitment, Ryan Wallace and Kevin Flaherty spoke with a big name in the quarterback coaching market.
Quarterback guru Justin Hoover discussed some of his previous prospects to make it big and a current name to watch out for, Kansas State’s Avery Johnson.
Hoover has worked with several notable prospects, including Drew Lock, Skylar Thompson, Graham Mertz, Avery Johnson, and more local prospects in the Kansas/Missouri area.
When discussing Johnson, Hoover spoke glowingly about his future, saying, “Because he’s such a dynamic athlete, you’re gonna get labeled as a dual threat, and some people are going to automatically say, ‘Well, can he really throw it?’ A lot of the unknowns are just simply that.”
Hoover continued by mentioning the lack of depth behind Johnson in the 2023 Pop-Tarts Bowl and how that played a factor in Avery throwing the ball away and avoiding the run in an effort to stay healthy.
“I think we’ll get to see the more natural player this year,” Hoover said. “One, more comfortable, and two, he’s not going to be told that when in doubt, throw it out of bounds or throw it away or whatever. I think he’s going to be able to showcase even more of the ability that we didn’t get to see in the bowl game.”
Johnson and the Wildcats are set to kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31st, against the UT Martin Skyhawks.
