Chris Beard Comments on ‘Vetting Process’ in Hiring Mark Adams

With the decision to hire former Texas Tech Mark Adams to his staff at Ole Miss, Chris Beard discussed the addition at a recent press conference and explained the thorough vetting process.

After resigning from Texas Tech for using inappropriate language toward his players, Adams spent one season on staff at East Carolina before accepting the position in the SEC.

“There’s a vetting process for everybody,” Beard said. “We hire in terms of reaching out, talking to past employers, and things like that. So, I understand the question with Coach Adams but absolutely. We went through the whole process, got the facts and the truth, and made a decision that we think is best for Ole Miss. We’re really happy Coach Adams is here.”

Adams, Texas Tech head coach from 2021-2023, resigned from the program after being suspended by the university over “inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comments” that he made to the team. Adams allegedly referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters, which quickly led to his suspension and eventual resignation.

According to a report from KCBD’s Brandon Soliz, Beard’s staff features five of his former assistants who were with him at Tech, including Al Pinkins, Bob Donewald Jr., Brian Burg, John Reilly, and now Mark Adams.
