The day when Victor Wembanyama, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, will become the best basketball player in the world could be not that far off.
The 7-foot-4 phenom averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and a league-high 3.6 blocked shots a game this past season despite not playing a full load of minutes, and he just won a silver medal in the Summer Olympics after his native France lost in the final round to the United States.
He posted a photo of him with that silver medal on social media along with the message “it’s just the beginning…” per ClutchPoints.

Thanks to his insane height and length (his wingspan is eight feet), Wembanyama is already a defensive nightmare who causes teams to change their method of attack, and his offensive game gradually came along a bit as his rookie year unfolded.
Per Basketball Reference, he averaged 23.2 points in his last 45 games, and as he gains more upper body and core strength, he will find it easier to score in the low post and near the basket.
His San Antonio Spurs don’t exactly have a strong team around him right now, but if and when they put together such a supporting cast, at least one NBA championship could become imminent.
In head coach and executive Gregg Popovich, they have a leader who knows how to win it all with a team built around a Hall of Fame big man, as he won five world titles with the legendary Tim Duncan.
