September 13, 2024 — Friday Statwatch for games played through September 11

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Statwatch, the part of this site’s coverage which aims to bring together the past and the present through a statistical lens.

We’ve noticed one interesting trend the last couple of years when it comes to the pace of play and the building of statistical portfolios. In a reaction to The Score-O Decade, which saw ridiculous scoring thanks to artificial turf and space-age sticks, coaches have started putting a lot of their better athletes in the backfield as well as in goalkeeper pads. Often, scholastic field hockey goalies are now the best athletes on the team, and we’ve seen well-trained keepers frustrate high-performance sides already this season.

Our statistical occurrence of the week occurred last evening, which is usually after our Wednesday cutoff for stat-gathering. But on this occasion, we’ll celebrate a rare accomplishment. Last evening, in the final four minutes of a game between Delmar (Del.) and Berlin Stephen Decatur (Md.), senior Jordyn Hollamon recorded her second assist of the season, feeding Somer Layton for the tally.

The assist gives Hollamon her 100th of her career, which, with her 164 goals through the close of play yesterday, puts her in some unique company. As far as we know, only 14 people have scored as many as 100 goals and 100 assists in a field hockey career. And if you look at this list below, you’ll note that three of our list — Meredith Sholder, Leah Crouse, and Emma Deberdine — represented the United States at the Paris Olympics.
