The Ottawa 67’s didn’t quite have enough to earn the full two points in Brampton on Friday night, as the Steelheads used the skills competition to sneak away with the win.
It was a low-event opening frame for the banged-up 67’s. Already without Kimi körbler and Caden Kelly, they lost captain Luca Pinelli before the game, forcing them to play with just 10 forwards and six defencemen. It took a turn for the worst when they got themselves into some penalty trouble late in the frame, and went down five-on-three.
The Steelheads’ strong power-play unit made the Barber Poles pay with under a minute to play in the opening period, with Angus MacDonell sniping his sixth goal of the season, giving the Trout the lead with the lone marker of the stanza.
In the second period, the Barber Poles cleaned up their discipline, while getting three power plays of their own. With just over five minutes to play in the frame, Filip Ekberg took a pass from Henry Mews on the power play, and beat Jacob Gibbons before he could even react, tying the game with 20 minutes left to play.
The clubs traded goals in the final period of regulation, with Porter Martone scoring for Brampton, and Cooper Foster getting another power play marker for Ottawa, resulting in the second consecutive overtime game for the 67’s.
Overtime solved nothing, and a shootout was needed. Luke Misa and Nic Whitehead started both sides with goals, before Martone scored the deciding goal, giving the Trout a 3-2 win.
