Los Angeles Dodgers fans, look away. Star slugger Shohei Ohtani left Saturday’s Game 2 of the World Series with a shoulder injury after attempting to steal second base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With the Dodgers leading 4-1, Ohtani appeared to think he had the jump on New York Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes and took off but was caught on the throw from catcher Austin Wells to shortstop Anthony Volpe.
Ohtani stayed down on the infield after his slide attempt, visibly grimacing in pain and gingerly grasping his left shoulder as he received attention from the team’s medical staff. He was eventually taken off the field and into the locker room.
Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported during the broadcast that the team was unsure of the severity of Ohtani’s injury.
His night was over after the slide as his spot at the top of the lineup did not come back around to see if the team would’ve likely replaced him with a pinch hitter.
Fans and reporters alike will wait eagerly for updates on Ohtani’s condition as the team makes them available.
If he were unable to return in the series it would be a massive blow to Los Angeles’ offensive capabilities as it seeks its second title in four seasons. Ohtani is 1-for-8 with two strikeouts and one run scored in two games.
