Shelton Defeats Rublev in Basel; Zheng Reaches Tokyo Semifinals

American Ben Shelton advanced to the semifinals of Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland on Friday, defeating top seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4.

Needing two hours and 15 minutes to advance, Shelton hit 13 aces, won 73 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on two occasions and never lost his own delivery.

The 22-year-old will next face No. 7 seed Arthur Fils in the semifinals. Fils ousted No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(5), 6-3.

Still to come on Friday, No. 4 seed Holger Rune and Canadian Denis Shapovalov will be in action.

Musetti Ousts Zverev

Italian Lorzeno Musetti scored a big win on Friday in Vienna, Austria, defeating top seed Alexander Zverev 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

In a match that lasted two hours and 37 minutes, Musetti used 36 winners to offset his towering opponent. Musetti will next face inform Brit Jack Draper.

The No. 7 seed defeated Tomas MacHac 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and seven minutes.

No. 2 seed Alex de Minuar and Russian Karen Khanchaov will be in action later today.

Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis—Tokyo, Japan

Top seed Qinwen Zheng moved into the semifinals in Tokyo, Japan on Friday, defeating Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.

The Chinese star will next face Diana Shnaider. The Russian received a walkover from Sayaka Ishii in the quarterfinals.

Zheng added seven aces and five breaks of serve to her victory over Fernandez.

Elsewhere, No. 9 seed Katie Boulter defeated former US Open winner Bianca Andresscu 6-2, 6-1, and Sofia Kenin upset recent Ningbo, China winner and No. 3 seed Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-4.

Siniakova Reaches Semifinals in Guangzhou

No. 1 seed Katerina Siniakova advanced to the final four in Guangzhou, China on Friday, dismissing American Bernarda Pera 6-4, 7-5.

The top seed will next face Olga Danilovic for a place in the finals.

Saturday’s other semifinal will feature Lucia Bronzetti taking on Caroline Dolehide.
