Skip Schumaker lands surprising new job with AL team

Former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker has landed a somewhat surprising new job that means he will not be in any dugout for the 2025 season.

The Texas Rangers are hiring Schumaker as a senior adviser to team president Chris Young, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. Schumaker’s former bench coach in Miami, Luis Urueta, is also expected to join the Rangers in the same role.

Schumaker was expected to be in high demand as a managerial candidate this offseason after he and the Marlins decided to part ways. However, not many jobs actually opened up for him. Outside of the Marlins job that he left behind, only the Chicago White Sox opted to hire a new manager, and Schumaker never looked like a serious candidate for that position.

One thing that might be worth noting is that current Rangers manager Bruce Bochy is heading into the final year of his contract. If the 69-year-old opts to call it a career after the season, Schumaker could be the preferred in-house option to succeed him, but that is purely speculative at this point.

Schumaker led the Marlins to a surprising playoff appearance in 2023, but the team was taken apart by trades for 2024 and slumped to 62-100. He is still well-regarded around the sport and figures to get plenty of looks for managerial jobs in the future.
