Medvedev Defeats de Minaur at 2024 ATP Finals in Turin
Tuesday’s action at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy featured Russian Daniil Medvedev picking up his first win at the competition, defeating No. 7 seed Alex de Minuar 6-2, 6-4.
As always, there are great tennis betting odds from the ATP Finals all week from Turin.
In a match that lasted one hour and 19 minutes, Medvedev used his serve and consistency from the baseline to offset his out-of-sorts opponent.
Hitting three aces, winning 84 percent of his first serve points and breaking serve on three occasions, Medvedev improved to 1-1 in group action this week and 7-3 against de Minuar in lifetime meetings.
De Minaur, who fell to 0-2 in Round Robin play, has affectively been eliminated from advancing to the semifinals. The hard-working Australian made the event when defending champion Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw with an ongoing knee injury.
The win for Medvedev still keeps him in contention for reaching the semifinal knockout stages this weekend. The 28-year-old will have the daunting task of having to dismiss year-end World No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Thursday.
Sinner will continue his quest for capturing the prestigious ATP Finals title later today when he faces No. 5 seed and US Open finalist Taylor Fritz from the United States.
The Italian defeated Fritz for his second Major in New York City earlier this Summer. Sinner owns a 2-1 head-to-head lead over Fritz in lifetime meetings and has won the last two against the 27-year-old.
Sinner has seven titles on the year and an ultra-impressive 66-6 win/loss record on the season. The 23-year-old has already amassed over 12 million in prize money in 2024. The top seed can add another $4.88 million to his earnings if he goes undefeated throughout the week.
Alcaraz Returns on Wednesday
Wednesday’s action in Turin is set to feature four-time Major winner Carlos Alcaraz taking on No. 8 seed Andrey Rublev.
Losing his first match to Casper Ruud on Tuesday in straight sets, Alcaraz is in danger of being eliminated from the tournament if he does not defeat his Russian opponent. Alcaraz has been dealing with a cold during the event and it has been visibly been affecting his game.
Rublev was the last player to qualify for the event after Djokovic withdrew. The hard-hitting Russian has two titles on his resume throughout the 2024 season.
Wednesday’s night session will be highlighted by No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev vs. Norway’s Ruud.
Zverev, who has been playing great as of late, recently won the Rolex Paris Master in France. The 27-year-old is having a season to remember, recording 67 singles wins to only 20 losses.
Zverev will enter his encounter with Ruud with a slight 3-2 head-to-head lead.
