Day five of the 2024 Nitto ATP finals featured the conclusion of Ilie Nastase Group and the first three-set match of the tournament.
First up was Taylor Fritz, who put himself in a solid position to make the semi-finals by grinding out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Alex de Minaur.
The fifth seed’s semi-final spot depended on the outcome of Sinner vs Medvedev, with anything other than a Medvedev straight-sets win sending him through to the last four.
Given Medvedev’s form, that result was doubtful, and Sinner came through 6-3 6-4 in 1 hour and 13 minutes to top the group, winning all three of his round-robin matches.

Fritz Fights Back, Finishes Strong to Secure Second Win at Nitto ATP Finals
Taylor Fritz rallied from a set down to secure his second win at the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals, edging out Alex de Minaur 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the afternoon session.
While never in control of the match, the American stayed determined and resilient against the debutant.
De Minaur began the match with his best tennis of the week, outhitting Fritz by 12 winners to seven in the opening set. His court coverage proved too much for Fritz to handle as everything came back, often with more pace or angle.
Fritz, who’s served exceptionally well in the latter part of the season, struggled to assert himself on that shot, not hitting his first ace until the seventh game of the second set. That moment, however, proved pivotal. He saved a break point, then broke De Minaur’s serve in the 10th game to level the match.
From there, Fritz kept his momentum, breaking De Minaur’s serve again in the third set to lead 3-1, and he’s now 4-5 in the H2H in a matchup he doesn’t enjoy.
Fritz’s win eliminated De Minaur, meaning he’d won 2 of his three matches. Still, he had to wait for the result of Thursday’s evening clash between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev to determine his fate.
Sinner’s straight-sets win meant he progressed by finishing second in the group. He’ll face the winner of the group, John Newcombe, on Saturday.
It’s tough, because even though I won the match, I feel like there wasn’t necessarily any moment when I feel like I had a repeatable way to win from the baseline, to be honest. He was all over me. What I did a great job of was towards the end of the second set, I really started to find my serve. I was serving much better and that allowed me to just stay with it and create more pressure on his service games. When I wasn’t making the first serves, he was just killing me from the baseline, so it just gave me a little bit of comfort to just stay in the match and not be under so much pressure all the time. I was able to just come up with some good shots at some good times, play off some of his mistakes, but it was still incredibly tough. Fritz on finding a way to win.

Sinner Seals Semis Spot with Solid Win Over Medvedev
Jannik Sinner delivered another composed performance on Thursday, extending his perfect start at the 2024 ATP Finals by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in their final round-robin match.
The top seed has dominated the pairs H2H in recent months, and that trend continued on Thursday, with Sinner having the measure of his opponent from the baseline to capture his 8th win in 9 meetings against the Russian.
Sinner has become the most clinical player on tour this season, and despite a brief fightback from Medvedev, who won three consecutive games in the second set, the Italian quickly regained control to seal his win in just 73 minutes.
Alongside his baseline game, Sinner’s serve has also improved vastly this season, and he’s got the best hold % at 91.2% for the year. Tonight, he dropped only two points behind his serve in the first set.
Medvedev leaves Turin with an off-season of contemplation and planning. He’s not had a good season, with no titles and a slew of losses to players he’d normally handle comfortably.
I’m trying to find new ways to improve as a player. I’m trying to win as many matches here as I can. Me and Daniil, we know each other very well. So, everytime we step on court, we try to change something tactically. I felt like I was ready to see what he was going to do today. I know what I have achieved during this year, so I try to step on court with a good mindset. I have beautiful people around me who support me daily, which for me is really important. I try to enjoy my time on the court. The atmosphere here is amazing, so I’m just trying to play some good tennis this week. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round. Sinner on his form this year.
