Newcastle United will be one of the busiest clubs in the transfer window.
The Magpies, currently sit in sixth position in the Premier League, having endured a difficult season after suffering an injury crisis.
Eddie Howe’s men failed to replicate the success of last season when they finished in the top four of the Premier League.
This season, they can finish in the European places in the league but they would miss the charm of playing in Europe’s elite competition.
Regarding the future of their players, they have tough decisions to make ahead of the transfer window.
One player who faces an uncertain future at the club is striker Callum Wilson.
The former Bournemouth striker was on the verge of leaving the club in January as Newcastle looked desperate to raise funds.
However, his exit could finally take place this summer as the Premier League club look desperate to balance their finances.
Journalist Chris Waugh has shared his verdict on the future of Wilson at St. James’ Park.
Waugh was asked if he believed Newcastle would sell Wilson this summer during a Q&A session for the Athletic.
“My gut instinct for the past few months has been that Callum Wilson may well leave this summer,” he wrote.
“It feels like a natural juncture for the two to part ways and it is the final opportunity for Newcastle to get a decent fee for a 32-year-old who has had repeated injury problems and is heading into the final year of his deal.
“My view did waver a couple of weeks ago, when Howe publicly stressed his desire to keep Wilson, and the head coach does present a strong footballing argument to retain the experienced Premier League forward. However, Wilson’s unavailability at the weekend once again underscored his durability issues, while Newcastle do need to raise funds from player sales, meaning Howe must lose someone he does not want to this summer, and others at the club have understandably pointed towards Wilson.
“Whether Wilson stays or goes, Newcastle are looking to sign a forward of some description.
Whether that is an out-and-out striker, a versatile forward, or both, is unclear at this stage.”
Keeping Wilson at the club makes little sense for the Magpies now.
Newcastle should cash in on Wilson
The striker has suffered fitness issues regularly and with him not getting any younger, it is time for the Premier League club to move on from him.
Wilson’s contract at the club is expiring at the end of next season so the Magpies risk losing him for free.
Howe wants to keep the striker since a new signing would be hesitant to play second fiddle to first choice striker Alexander Isak.
They may have to spend a considerable amount of money to bring in a replacement of Wilson but that would help the club in the longer run instead of keeping Wilson.
