According to team play-by-play announcer Bram Weinstein, the Washington Commanders are considering making changes to their uniforms, though there’s no timeline for when those changes could take place.
“The look is something that is making its way around (behind the scenes),” Weinstein said on his podcast, The Bram Weinstein Show. “Will that happen anytime soon? I don’t think so, but that’s a change you may see in the not-too-distant future.
“If I had to guess – and I’m guessing – (it will be) something that merges their old Redskins look into a more modern feel with those colors. I know this (ownership) group really, really, really wants to lean into the past. The easiest way to do that and to merge the new with the old is to have something very reminiscent of that look.”
The Commanders introduced their current uniform set in 2022 after retiring their controversial nickname and then playing two seasons as the Washington Football Team, who wore a stripped-down version of the Redskins’ look.
The uniforms include a burgundy helmet, burgundy home jerseys and white road jerseys with a gradient pattern in the numbers and sleeve stripes, burgundy or white pants and an all-black alternate design. They also added gold pants as an option this season.
That said, teams are restricted from making uniform changes more than once every five seasons, so Washington would typically have to wait until 2027 to introduce a new look. But extenuating circumstances such as their recent ownership change could allow them to accelerate that timeline.
One thing that suggests those changes won’t happen in 2025, though, is the hiring of new team president Mark Clouse, the former CEO and president of The Campbell’s Company who oversaw the development of brands like Goldfish, Pepperidge Farm and Rao’s.
“He’s not going to walk in the door and three months later change something, which is why (we should) hit the breaks, nothing’s going to happen fast,” Weinstein said. “I’m sure he’s got some ideas, but they’re not going to do anything overnight. There’s going to be a lot of thought put into it.”
Weinstein added he hasn’t heard any rumblings about a possible name change alongside a potential uniform redesign, though the front office is aware the Commanders’ moniker isn’t the most popular among fans.
“I have not heard a single thing about changing anytime soon,” he said. “That doesn’t mean it won’t at some point, (but) this is not high on the priority list and it’s not something that’s simple to do … It’s a very difficult, expensive project.”
Even if that eventually becomes part of the conversation, Weinstein quickly shot down the idea of the Commanders becoming the Redskins again, saying, “That’s literally not happening. That part I can tell you for a fact is not happening.”
