The Pittsburgh Steelers overhauled their quarterback room last offseason, ultimately finishing 2024 with a winning record with both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson as the starting quarterbacks. Heading into a new offseason, more change is expected.
Wilson and Fields are both top NFL free agents in 2025, with several suitors already linked to the veteran signal-callers. Fields is expected to have interest from the Indianapolis Colts and potentially the Las Vegas Raiders, while Wilson is on the Raiders’ radar. What’s clear is both will have opportunities to be starting quarterbacks next season.

- Russell Wilson stats (ESPN):Â 95.6 QB rating, 16-5 TD-INT ratio 2,482 passing yards, 7.4 yards per attempt, 63.7% completion rate, 155 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns in 11 games
Pittsburgh has an interest in both of its starting quarterbacks from the 2024 campaign, but even a best-case scenario would only see one of the two re-signing with the club. Recent NFL rumors have suggested that Fields is likelier to stay, but even that might no longer be a probable outcome.
In his latest mailbag, Sports Illustrated‘s NFL insider Albert Breer shared his belief that the likeliest outcome this offseason is the Steelers bringing in an outside quarterback to become their starter in 2025. Fields returning is the second-likeliest outcome, with a return for Pittsburgh for Wilson least likely to happen.

- Justin Fields stats 2024 (ESPN):Â 93.3 QB rating, 5-1 TD-INT, 1,106 passing yards, 6.9 yards per attempt, 65.8% completion rate, 289 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns in 10 games
It would be somewhat surprising, considering Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin benched Fields in favor of Wilson early in the 2024 season. However, the sentiment regarding the 36-year-old quarterback around the franchise has seemed to shift in recent months.
Even if the Steelers re-sign Fields, Breer believes the team would likely add a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft to compete for the starting quarterback job. If Pittsburgh takes the veteran route to replace him, Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers have been linked as potential upgrades for the Steelers.
