New York Giants a ‘sleeper’ for top veteran QB this offseason

The New York Giants have been saddled with one of the worst quarterback situations in the NFL for the last two years. While plenty of NFL rumors early this offseason have pointed to the 2025 NFL Draft as the likely answer to the team’s long-standing issue, a new option seems to be emerging.

New York has already been connected to a potential Matthew Stafford trade. While the Los Angeles Rams want their veteran quarterback back for the 2025 season, it will only happen if he restructures his contract. Otherwise, Los Angeles could trade its Pro Bowl quarterback and pursue a veteran replacement in free agency.

For now, though, the likelihood of the Rams trading Stafford after consecutive playoff trips is low. However, NFL rumors surfaced over the weekend that have highlighted another emerging option for New York.

Appearing on SportsCenter this past Sunday, ESPN senior NFL insider Jeremy Fowler shared that the Giants are a “sleeper” team to sign Russell Wilson. While the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders have long been viewed as the front-runners for Wilson, New York is reportedly a team to keep an eye on.

“But Wilson himself should have options too. Talking to some Ex-Seattle aides, they said that Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson have pieced it up, so maybe Las Vegas could shake out for him. I’m also told the Giants are considered a sleeper option for Russell Wilson.”

  • Russell Wilson stats (ESPN): 95.6 QB rating, 16-5 TD-INT ratio 2,482 passing yards, 7.4 yards per attempt, 63.7% completion rate, 155 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns in 11 games

Wilson, age 36, would be an ideal bridge quarterback for New York. The team could sign him to a one- or two-year contract, with assurances he would be the Giants starting quarterback in 2025. It would reduce the front office’s incentive to potentially trade up to the first overall pick for the top quarterback prospect, instead allowing New York to exercise more patience at the position.

If Wilson or another viable veteran starter comes in, the Giants could stand pat at the No. 3 overall pick and select whichever of Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders is still available. In the event both are off the board, New York could fill its need at cornerback and add some play-making help at wide receiver with Travis Hunter.
