Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Thursday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
BYU at Kansas State
With BYU out of the postseason picture, the pressure was all on Kansas State in this series. And if Thursday night was any indication of how this series is going to play out then we are all in for a treat.
The Wildcats got off to a great start in this one as they scored six runs in the first four innings. Brady Day, Kaelen Culpepper, Jaden Parsons, and David Bishop all came up with clutch hits to help get their team a 6-0 lead. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any video of that or else I would have included it here.
But Kansas State’s lead would not be safe. Cooper Vest hit a two-run blast in the fifth inning to put the Cougars on the board.
Two innings later Easton Jones knocked in a run and then with the bases loaded, Vest once again came through as he drove in two more runs to pull his team within one.
Then in the bottom of the ninth, down by one, BYU’s Collin Reuter hit a solo blast off Tyson Neighbors to tie the game and send it into extras.
Both teams would go scoreless until the twelfth inning. That is when Kansas State’s Kyan Lodice called game.
Best Win
Oklahoma
After winning the Big 12 regular season title last weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners went to Cincinnati on Thursday and put on an offensive clinic. They scored a whopping 26 runs in two games against the Bearcats. Of course, they ended up winning both games to take the series. Now they will play one more game on Friday and go for the sweep. You can question this pitching staff all you want but the one thing you can’t question is their offense.
Worst Loss
Cincinnati
Coming into Thursday, I felt like Cincinnati needed to win their series against Oklahoma to punch their ticket to the postseason without having to worry. And instead of winning, their pitching staff had a complete meltdown in both games of their doubleheader. They gave up over ten runs in each game and never could keep up with the Sooners. Now Friday becomes a must win to avoid being swept.
Thursday MVP
Texas SS Jalin Flores
While he may not have had the best numbers, his RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning won the game for Texas.
Pitcher of the Day
Texas RHP Charlie Hurley
Charlie pitched a great game against Kansas. He went six full innings and didn’t allow a single run. In fact, he only gave up a total of four hits.
Best Home Run
Texas PH Casey Borba
Casey hit this game tying home run in the ninth inning for Texas.
