“I’m not at all worried about the domestic violence trial, not at all. In the end I have faith in the German system and I believe in the truth. I know what I did and what I didn’t do. This is what will come to light and I have faith in the system Everything else is out of my control.
I think I will not lose this case. I wouldn’t be able to play like I’m doing.” Alexander Zverev came back to talk about the domestic violence allegations made by his former girlfriend Brenda Patea. On May 31, the trial will begin in Berlin on charges of domestic violence and abuse brought against him by his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of their daughter Mayla, born in 2021.
The German was sentenced by the Berlin district court to pay a fine of 450 thousand euros for domestic violence; an ordinance which he opposed led by his team of lawyers, belonging to the Schertz Bergmann law firm, who defined the whole thing as scandalous.
Zverev says his domestic violence case isn’t impacting his tennis & there’s no chance he’ll lose in his trial:
“Not at all. At the end of the day, I do believe in the German system. I do believe in the truth.
I have to be certain that, you know, I know what I did, I know what I… pic.twitter.com/XtsHaJxaJn — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) May 24, 2024
Meanwhile, two years after the French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal, the German will face the Spanish champion again in the first round of the 2024 edition of the Parisian Major.
It seems as if fate – two years after the terrible injury suffered by Zverev in Paris against Rafa – had wanted to play a joke on the recent winner of the Italian Open. In the semi-final of the Roland Garros 2022 Zverev injured all three lateral ligaments of his right ankle due to a bad sprain.
Without thinking about the opportunities wasted by Zverev in that first set he lost despite seven set points, the German asked himself several times: “Will I be able to play again?” In Rome, however, he sent a clear message by winning the first major title since that injury.
“I hope I can play my best tennis in Paris. It’s the Slam I want to win more than anyone. It’s the most physical and tough one, the one where I built the most memories: both good and bad. Sure, at the US Open I came within two points of the title…
but in Paris I reached three consecutive semi-finals playing the best tennis of my career, I injured my ankle and it’s an event always marked in red on my schedule. It’s the Slam that I’m perhaps looking forward to the most,” said Zverev.
Nadal, on the other hand, would like to give himself one last big dream at Roland Garros. The King of the caly-courts was also honored with a statue sculpted by Jordi DÃez Fernandez at the Grand Public entrance and at the Jardin des Mousquetaires and, after results recorded between Barcelona, Madrid and Rome, there will immediately be a fight for him.
Nadal lost to Alex de Minaur, Jiri Lehecka and Hubert Hurkacz respectively to push hard into the round of 16 at the Mutua Madrid Open.
Zverev will never be able to feel comfortable on a court that saw him go out in a wheelchair and which risked changing his career.
In various circumstances he referred to the anxiety that assails him on the precise piece of dirt where the unfortunate episode occurred. Nadal could be his last at Roland Garros. He believes he can still raise the Musketeers Cup to the skies.
