The New York Knicks (53-34, 24-19 away, 47-37-3 ATS) blew a huge opportunity to advance on Tuesday night, letting a 96-90 lead slip away in the final 25 seconds of Game 5 at home against the Philadelphia 76ers (49-38, 26-17 home, 50-38 ATS).

The Knicks still lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 as it shifts back to Philadelphia for Game 6 at Wells Fargo Arena (9:10 pm ET) but they head into Thursday as road underdogs to the Sixers.

New York Knicks vs Philadelphia 76ers Odds (Game 6)

Thursday’s NBA odds list the 76ers as three-point home chalk and -155 favorites on the moneyline. The Knicks are +130 to end the series tonight. For the first time all series, the game total is under 200, currently sitting at 199.5.

The Knicks remain -390 favorites to advance in the NBA playoff bracket but that’s considerably longer than the -1000 odds New York was sporting prior to Game 5. The Sixers’ odds to advance improved from +650 to +310 after Tuesday’s road upset.

Maxey’s Heroics Keep Sixers’ Season Alive

Tyrese Maxey played saviour for the 76ers in Game 5, dropping a game-high (and playoff career-high) 46 points in Philadelphia’s 112-106 OT win. Maxey shot 17-of-30 from the floor while also dishing out nine assists. Joel Embiid was held to just 19 points, but grabbed 16 rebounds and had 10 assists and four blocks for his first triple-double since Jan. 2.

Jalen Brunson scored 40 points for the Knicks, his third straight game with at least 39, but the Knicks finished the game -6 on the glass in a rarity.  The Knicks have still grabbed 52.4% of all available rebounds in the series.

Knicks vs 76ers Public Betting Splits

The public is siding the home team in the NBA public betting splits for Game 6.  The Sixers are getting 59% of ATS handle and 66% of moneyline handle as of 11 am ET.

The public is also hammering the over, with 95% of game-total handle on over 199.5 so far. The public got lucky in Game 5, when 89% of handle was on over 204. The teams played to a 97-97 tie in regulation (194 points) before combining for 24 more points in OT and flying over the total.

NYK vs PHI Game 6 Injury Reports

Bojan Bogdanovic (15.2 PPG, 2.7 RPG) is officially out for the season after suffering an ankle injury in Game 4. The 35-year-old vet had 13 points in 25 minutes off the bench in New York’s Game 1 win but scored just 11 points in 26 minutes over the next two-plus games.

Mitchell Robinson (5.6 PPG, 8.5 RPG) is listed as questionable due to an ankle injury. Robinson sat out Game 4 but returned for Game 5 and played an important defensive role in his 25 minutes. Robinson finished with two points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Aside from Robert Covington, who’s been out since late December, the only name on Philly’s injury report is Joel Embiid. The reigning NBA MVP is once again “questionable” with his lingering knee issues. Embiid was also questionable ahead of Game 5 before putting up a triple-double (19 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists) in 48 minutes, including OT.

Brunson’s point total is sitting at 33.5, one lower than his total for Game 5. Embiid’s total has come down from 32.5 to 30.5, while Maxey’s has increased from 25.5 to 26.5 after his monster Game 5 performance.

If the Knicks aren’t dominating the boards, they’re in trouble. I picked the Sixers to come up with a road upset ahead of Game 5 because effort was the biggest problem in the first four games of the series, and that’s an eminently correctible problem.

In a vacuum, I firmly believe the 76ers are the superior team. In the first half of the regular season, when Embiid was fully healthy, they ranked even higher than the Celtics in Net Rating and had the look of a true NBA championship contender. They haven’t reached those heights again yet since Embiid’s return, but they’re getting there, and I fully expect this series to go the full seven games.
