Zverev Defeats Nadal in Potential Final French Open
Fourteen-Time French Open winner Rafael Nadal played his potential final match at the event on Monday, losing in straight sets to No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.
Recording 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 in three hours and five minutes, Zverev played at his highest level throughout the encounter. Striking eight aces, winning 72 percent of his first serve points and hitting 44 winners, Zverev will next face either David Goffin or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Mpetshi Perricard won his first-career title in Lyon, France last week.
Nadal Hints of Return to Roland Garros
After his defeat to Zverev on Monday, Nadal stated that it was “probably” his last dance at Roland Garros but did not want to confirm that he would not return. Riddled with injuries throughout the last two years, Nadal last won a tournament at the French Open in 2022.
The legendary Spaniard owns 22 career Majors and 92 career titles.
In attendance for his potential final match at his most successful event, top seeds Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek and former world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz were all on hand for the historic moment.
Other men’s winners on Monday included No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner, No. 9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 15 seed Ben Shelton, No. 18 seed Karen Khachanov and No. 20 seed Sebastian Baez.
Swiatek, Gauff Progress
World no. 1 Iga Swiatek started her campaign in style on Monday in Paris, defeating Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-2. The inform Pole will next face four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka for a place in round three.
Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, No. 8 seed Ons Jabeur, No. 11 seed Danielle Collins, No. 15 seed Elena Svitolina and No. 23 seed Anna Kalinskaya all reached round two.
Tuesday’s action in Paris will feature defending champion Novak Djokovic and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka.
