Betway ambassador Katie Walsh – who boasts being the first female jockey to place at the Grand National race – narrates the history of female achievement in the iconic Aintree event.

Has a woman ever won the Grand National?

As the most famous horse race in the world, the Grand National is always one of the biggest days in the horse racing betting calendar. Yet, since the inaugural race in 1839, just 20 female jockeys have negotiated the iconic Aintree fences.

Here’s a brief overview of some of the most notable moments from these iconic women over the years:

  • 1977: Charlotte Brew becomes the first woman to take part in the race

  • 1982: Geraldine Rees is the first female jockey to finish the course

  • 2012: Katie Walsh becomes the first woman to place at the Grand National in 3rd position

  • 2021: Rachael Blackmore becomes the first women to win the Grand National

  • 2024: Rachael Blackmore finishes third, making her the first female jockey to achieve two podium finishes
