Like it or not, the Kansas City Chiefs are just breezing along this year, cruising toward what would be an unprecedented three straight Super Bowl wins if they can pull it off. The AFC playoff bracket promises to be intriguing, as the top three teams on the AFC Championship Odds list seem very close in terms of parity.
The Bills have beaten the Chiefs, who have beaten the Ravens…who have beaten the Bills. If you step one more team down the ladder, you find the Chargers, who have lost twice to the Chiefs…by a combined nine points.
After that, things get a little less likely. The Steelers have lost three in a row, and the Houston offense has seen its trifecta of star wide receivers reduced down to a recovered Nico Collins.
Denver would take the seventh and final playoff spot with a win over Kansas City in Week 18, but if the Chiefs win, that opens the door for Cincinnati, a 4-8 team that is now 8-8 after a tough win over the Broncos, or Miami – although the Dolphins are not likely to have Tua Tagovailoa.
Tyler Huntley was able to do enough to stop Cleveland, but that’s a low bar these days. Let’s look at the online betting odds of each team still alive for the postseason, as well as some thoughts about some of the contenders.
AFC Championship Odds at Week 17 NFL 2024/25 Season
- Kansas City Chiefs +156
- Buffalo Bills +260
- Baltimore Ravens +310
- L.A. Chargers +1525
- Pittsburgh Steelers +2200
- Houston Texans +2300
- Denver Broncos +3000
- Cincinnati Bengals +11000
- Miami Dolphins +11000
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals blew two late opportunities to beat the Denver Broncos last week, including clanking a 33-yard field goal attempt off the upright, but in overtime, Tee Higgins took over as the Bengals won the game. Higgins ended up with 11 catches for 131 yards and three scores, including the game-winner.
The Bengals’ defense has been largely nonexistent this season, but they did show up after Cincinnati missed that field goal in the extra frame, getting a huge three-and-out to allow Joe Burrow to guide his team to the clinching touchdown. As long as the Bengals keep winning, they’re mathematically alive, and now all the pressure is on Bo Nix and the Broncos.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs have clinched the top seed and could sit their key skill players next week against the Broncos. But will they? If the Broncos win, that takes the Bengals out of the equation, and Joe Burrow is a lot more dangerous quarterback than Bo Nix.
If the Bengals win, though, they would take on Buffalo in the first round, and as electric as the Bengals’ offense is, Cincinnati would have a puncher’s chance of taking down the Bills. The Chiefs’ pass rush was impressive against the Broncos, sacking Russell Wilson five times.
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens would clinch their division with a win in Week 18. They lead the Steelers by a game in the division, an almost unthinkable situation a few weeks ago, and the Ravens get last-place Cleveland at home in Week 18.
The Ravens’ defense has figured out how to shut other teams down, and Lamar Jackson is battling Josh Allen for likely MVP honors. The Ravens could be ready to make a deep postseason run, and they’ve already spanked Buffalo once.
Houston Texans
The Texans are locked into the 4-seed, so don’t expect their starters to play more than a quarter against Tennessee in Week 18. They’ve already lost wide receivers Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs, nickel back Jalen Pitre and safety Jimmie Ward for the season – they don’t need to lose more, particularly in a game that can do nothing for them in terms of seeding. A first-round matchup with the Steelers or Ravens would likely put a quick end to what was once a promising Houston season.
