The Air Force football program will honor the Air Force Special Operations Command with its annual Air Power Legacy Series alternate uniforms, which will be worn against Navy on Oct. 5 (12 p.m. ET on CBS/Paramount+).
Headquartered at Hurlburt Field in Florida’s Panhandle, the AFSOC deploys air power and provides combat support, search and rescue, information warfare, precision aerospace fires and other special operations to unified commands around the world.
It is among the Air Force’s most decorated communities, with one Medal of Honor recipient, as well as hundreds of Air Force Crosses, Silver Stars, Bronze Star Medals and Purple Hearts being awarded in its nearly 42-year history.
In fact, a member of the AFSOC has been involved in almost every major combat operation and global humanitarian mission since Sept. 11, 2001, while 21 operators have been killed in action, including three Air Force Academy graduates.
As for the uniforms, the crown of the matte black helmet features the winged dagger and star from the AFSOC’s emblem, while the front bumper prominently displays the Special Tactics Combat Control motto of “First There.”
The back bumper, meanwhile, includes one of the three parts to the AFSOC’s motto, which is “Any Place, Any Time, Anywhere.” The helmet is complete with the Air Force Special Tactics logo on the back.
The anthracite jerseys are rather simple, with an “Air Force” wordmark above numbers that feature sublimated outlines of helicopters and drones, as well as the U.S. Flag on the right sleeve and one of three different patches on the left sleeve.
Each insignia represents a different career field in the Air Force, including a special tactics officer, combat controller or special reconnaissance airman, and notably includes the globe and a lightning bolt, among other images.
Lastly, the anthracite pants feature the AFSOC dagger down the left leg and the aforementioned combat control motto down the right leg, while the scarlet accents seen throughout are a nod to the berets worn by combat controllers.
This marks the ninth iteration of the Air Power Legacy Series uniforms, as the Falcons honored Tiger Shark nose art in 2016, the F-35 Lighting II in 2017, the AC-130 “Spooky” gunship in 2018, the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III in 2019, the Tuskegee Airmen in 2020, the B-52 Stratofortress in 2021, the Space Force in 2022 and the Doolittle Raid in 2023.
Air Force has complied a 15-2 record when wearing the Air Power Legacy Series uniforms, including a 17-6 win over the Midshipmen last October and a 27-13 loss at Hawai’i last November.
