Two-time Major winner Carlos Alcaraz began his campaign at the French Open in style on Sunday, defeating American J.J. Wolf 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

In match that lasted one hour and 51 minutes, Alcaraz struck 27 winners, broke serve on nine occasions and hit 5 aces.

Entering the event with an arm injury, the Spaniard will next face either Jack Draper or Jesper De Jong for a place in the third round.

Elsewhere, No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev, No 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov and Zhizhen Zhang all advanced to the round of 64.

No. 17 seed Ugo Humbert was sent packing by flamboyant Italian Lorenzo Sonego in four sets.

Swiatek Could be Up Next for Osaka

On the women’s side, four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka needed three tough sets to advance over Lucia Bronzetti. Recording a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory, Osaka struck six aces, won 72 percent of her first serve points and hit 31 winners.

The Japanese star will next either world No. 1 Iga Swiatek or qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.

Other women’s results on the day included No. 9 seed Jelena Ostapenko, No. 30 seed Dayana Yastremska and Donna Vekic all advancing to the next round.

Nadal vs. Zverev on Monday

Monday’s schedule of play at the French Open will featured a titanic encounter between 14-time winner Rafael Nadal taking on No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.

Nadal has stated that this will likely be his last French Open. The Spaniard has won the French Open in his teens, 20’s and 30’s.

Zverev, who recently won the Italian Open in Rome, is currently the oddsmakers favourite to advance.
