Alcaraz Returns to the Winner’s Circle with Davis Cup Victory in Valencia
Four-time Major winner Carlos Alcaraz returned to the winner’s circle on Wednesday in Valencia, Spain, leading his team to a Davis Cup victory over Czechia.
Needing one hour and 38 minutes to prevail, Alcaraz defeated Tomas Machac 6-7(3), 6-1, 0-0, 40-40, ret.
Slamming 18 winners and breaking serve on three occasions, Alcaraz and team Spain will next face France on Friday the 13th.
Roberto Bautista Agut gained a 1-0 tie lead for Spain when he dismissed Jiri Lehecka 7-6(1), 6-4 earlier in the day.
Alcaraz, who has had a tough time on Tour after reaching the finals of the Olympic Games, will look to rebound this week in Valencia and then during the Asian swing.
Earlier in the day, The United States posted a clean sweep over Chile by winning the tie 3-0.
Brandon Nakashima and Reilly Opelka recorded three-set victories over Alejandro Tabilo and Cristian Garin, respectively. In doubles action, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram also needed three sets to dismiss Tomas Barrios Vera and Matias Soto.
Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini scored a straight set victory over Joao Fonseca to give Italy a 1-0 lead in their tie against Brazil.
Group Stage action continues on Thursday with the Netherlands vs. Brazil, Australia vs. Czechia, Germany vs. Chile and Canada vs. Finland.
