Alex Bregman entered the winter as one of the best players in MLB free agency, hoping to join fellow top free agents in landing a $200-plus million contract. Months later, the All-Star third baseman is still available and he could reportedly sign with a team very soon.

When the offseason began, MLB rumors linked Bregman to the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, New York Mets and Detroit Tigers. As the Blue Jays, Yankees and Mets dropped out of the mix, the Chicago Cubs emerged as a suitor.

Houston even traded All-Star relief pitcher Ryan Pressly, reducing payroll for the 2025 season, to improve its contract offer to the long-time fan favorite. However, Astros general manager Dana Brown has stated in the weeks leading up to spring training that a deal is unlikely.

According to ESPN‘s Buster Olney, Bregman is “likely” to sign soon. The two-time World Series champ has multiyear offers from four teams, including the Astros, with a decision coming down to the Tigers, Red Sox and Cubs. Jon Morosi of MLB Network confirmed that Boston, Detroit and Chicago all have standing multiyear contract proposals right now.

If he winds up in Boston, Bregman would be placed in the heart of the Red Sox lineup alongside Jarren Durran, Rafael Devers and Triston Casas. However, the club would be asking him to move to second base, with Devers a third, a position the club is confident Bregman would provide Gold Glove-caliber defense at.

In Chicago, Bregman would likely stick at third base until top prospect Matt Shaw is ready for his MLB debut. If Shaw were to be called up, the Cubs could move Bregman to another position. However, Nico Hoerner is already an established Gold Glove winner at second.

As for Detroit, it is offering Bregman the opportunity to stick at third base and reunite with former Astros manager A.J. Hinch. All three clubs still in the mix are viewed as viable playoff contenders already, with Bregman strengthening their chances of becoming one of the best MLB teams in 2025.
