It’s been an interesting couple of weeks in our Top 10 corner of the internet, for sure. Last weekend, the 12 contests played at Spring Fling in Alexandria, Va. were very consequential, especially for the host institution, Alexandria St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (Va.), who swept not only those two games, but got a big result over Bethesda Stone Ridge (Md.).
What also threw this list into a tizzy was a rarity: a tie. Yep, at the Queen Anne County tournament last weekend, Lewes Cape Henlopen (Del.) and Marriottsville Marriotts Ridge (Md.) played to a 9-all draw. We don’t know whether this was a situation like last year’s regular-season contest between Darien (Conn.) and New Canaan (Conn.) where the officials walked off the field after the two halves of the overtime period were played, which is the CIAC rule.
I would not be surprised if the called draw was necessary to keep on schedule for the multistate tournament gathering. Still, it throws a spanner into the works when it comes to national rankings.
1. South Huntington St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) 5-0
Today will have an enormous contest against Darien (Conn.), and the Friars will be building towards next Tuesday’s contest with Wilton (Conn.)
2. Newtown Square Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 11-0
Episcopal’s game this Thursday against Rosemont Agnes Irwin (Pa.) will be one of the telling games for this team this season
3. Darien (Conn.) 3-0
The Wave had a gripping 11-10 win over host Garden City (N.J.). Keep an eye on today’s game against No. 1 St. Anthony’s
4. Owings Mills McDonogh (Md.) 9-1
The Eagles got a 9-5 win over Brooklandville St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.); they hit the road this week against Glenelg (Md.) Country School and Lutherville Maryvale Prep (Md.)
5. Rosemont Agnes Irwin (Md.) 8-1
There are no easy games for this high-flying Owls team; Thursday sees the team playing Episcopal Academy in a game likely to determine the top seed in the PAISAA Tournament
6. Coronado (Calif.) 11-0
The team managed three tense wins last week and have long-time stalwart San Diego Scripps Ranch on Thursday
7. Severna Park (Md.) 7-0
The Falcons got by Annapolis Broadneck (Md.) 8-7 in triple overtime on Friday
8. Alexandria St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (Va.) 12-1
The Saints powered through their two Spring Fling matches and were especially impressive in beating Willmette Loyola Academy (Ill.) 20-4
9T. Lewes Cape Henlopen (Del.) 7-0-1
The Vikings beat Kent Island (Md.) in the opening game of the Shore Spring Break Tournament, but tied Marriottsville Mariotts Ridge (Md.) 9-9 in their Saturday game
9T. Marriottsville Marriotts Ridge (Md.) 4-2-1
The Mustangs, after dropping their first two games of the season, are seemingly in championship form again. The next opponent is Latham Shaker (N.Y.) tomorrow
Who’s out: Wilmette Loyola Academy (Ill.) 20-4 loss to Alexandria St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (Va.); Bethesda Stone Ridge (Md.) 10-8 loss to Alexandria St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (Va.)
And bear in mind: Delray American Heritage (Fla.) 13-2, Wilmette Loyola Academy (Ill.) 10-2, Bethesda Stone Ridge (Md.) 12-4, Glenelg (Md.) 6-2, Annapolis Broadneck (Md.) 5-2, Brooklandville St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.) 7-3, Lutherville Maryvale Preparatory (Md.) 8-2, Annapolis St. Mary’s (Md.) 7-4, Summit (N.J.) 4-1, Moorestown (N.J.) 6-0
