Today, at Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.), 20 teams will play 10 intersectional matchups in what has been a great series of girls’ scholastic lacrosse games to benefit the Making Headway Foundation.
There are a number of nationally-ranked teams competing today, as well as some contenders for state and national honors.
While all 10 of these games will have their own stories I’m pointing out three games for you to watch:
11 a.m., Lower Turf — Darien (Conn.) vs. Sayville (N.Y.)
Darien, the best team in the country in 2023, has been unafraid to match sticks with the best of Long Island. The Blue Wave are 7-1 this season, including an 11-10 overtime win over Garden City (N.Y.). Meanwhile, Sayville has a record of 8-1, with the lone blemish a two-goal defeat against Smithtown (N.Y.) West
1 p.m., Lower Turf — South Huntington St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) vs. Chatham (N.J.)
Both teams come into the game undefeated. St. Anthony’s is a senior-laden team with strength in every position. Chatham is an interesting story. They have seemingly come out of nowhere to become a power in the sport, winning the last three state titles on offer and seven overall. Chatham has quality wins over Summit (N.J.), Ridgewood (N.J.) and and Morristown (N.J.). This is a game to keep an eye on
5 p.m., Lower Turf — Garden City (N.Y.) vs. New Canaan (Conn.)
These are perennial powerhouses; Garden City has won 15 state championships while New Canaan has won eight CIAC titles. However, both teams are imperfect in their seasons thus far. Garden City started with a one-goal loss to Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), then lost by one to Darien (Conn.). New Canaan also has had two early defeats; an early-season loss to Westhampton (N.Y.) Beach, then lost April 16th by 11 goals to Nyack (N.Y.). Both teams could use wins for their confidence going forward
I encourage you to go out and support these athletes; you’re going to see a lot of these folks in the college and, perhaps, the professional ranks one day.
