Auger-Aliassime Advances in Basel; Andreescu Moves on in Tokyo

No. 8 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland on Wednesday, defeating Sebastian Baez 7-5, 6-1.

Needing one hour and 15 minutes to prevail, the Canadian hit eight aces, won 86 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions.

Improving to 2-0 against Baez in lifetime meetings, Auger-Aliassime will next face towering Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Still to come on Tuesday, top seed Andrey Rublev, No. 2 seed Casper Ruud and home-country favourite Stan Wawrinka will be in action.

Dimitrov, MacHac Advance in Vienna

No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov reached the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday, dismissing Zhizhen Zhang 6-4, 7-5.

The Bulgarian star will take on Tomas MacHac in the second round. MacHac continued his great season by dispatching Fabian Marozsan 7-6(5), 6-1 in one hour and 12 minutes.

Matches that are still to be featured on Tuesday in Vienna will see top seed Alexander Zverev, No. 4 seed Tommy Paul, No. 5 seed Frances Tiafoe and Karen Khachanov.

Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis—Tokyo, Japan

Wednesday’s schedule in Tokyo, Japan saw former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu advance to the quarterfinals after her opponent No. 2 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia was forced to withdraw after only three games.

Andreescu, who is ranked No. 159 in the world, will next face Katie Boulter or Kyoka Okamura for a place in the semifinals.

Other winners on the day included No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider, No. 8 seed Leylah Fernandez and Sayaka Ishii from Japan.

Thursday’s order of play will see top seed Qinwen Zheng and recent Ningbo champion Daria Kasatkina on court.

Guangzhou Open Results

Day 3 action in Guangzhou, China saw No. 7 seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro reach the quarterfinals. The Spaniard ousted Han Shi 6-3, 6-4.

Other results on the day saw Olga Danilovic dispatch No. 5 seed Diane Parry 6-1, 6-0. Lucia Bronzetti and Xiyu Wang also progressed to the quarterfinals.

Thursday’s schedule will feature the top three seeds. Katerina Siniakova, Marie Bouzkova and Yue Yuan will all aim to reach the quarterfinals.
