Carlos Alcaraz showed the ultimate respect and appreciation for Novak Djokovic despite dominating the Serb in the Wimbledon final as the 21-year-old Spaniard said he still considers the record 24-time Grand Slam champion “a Superman.”
On Sunday, Alcaraz lifted his second Wimbledon trophy after beating Djokovic in the final 6-2 6-2 7-6 (4) for a second consecutive year.Â
With this win, Alcaraz has his first back-to-back Grand Slam titles and now has four Majors in his collection while Djokovic remains without any Slam or any other titles in 2024.
Djokovic struggling – all while Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been doing extremely well – led to some wondering if the new era in men’s tennis has officially started and if the Serb is not anymore that guy on the ATP Tour.
Alcaraz shows massive respect for Djokovic
After beating Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, Alcaraz was told about his past remark that Djokovic was “a Superman” and asked if he thought the roles changed.Â
“Well I still believe Novak is Superman. What he’s done in this tournament with a surgery just a few weeks before the tournament began is amazing. It’s unbelievable. As I said on court, I was talking with my team that the work he’s done has been unbelievable. He gave himself the chance to be able to play the tournament.. Making the final is something out of this world for me. I beat him today. But for me, Novak is still Superman,” Alcaraz said.
Meanwhile, Djokovic admitted in his post-final press conference that he was “inferior” to Alcaraz in the final and confessed that he was not currently on the level of the Spaniard and Sinner.Â
In less than two weeks, the Paris Olympics will be taking and that’s where Alcaraz and Djokovic’s next match on the big stage could possibly come.
