The Los Angeles Lakers are in desperate need of a new coach.
Despite making it to the playoffs the past two seasons, they moved on from Darvin Ham, who was unable to take the team on a deep run.
When it was announced that the team was going in a different direction, the rumor mill immediately went into overdrive.
Fans and analysts alike tried to predict who the team would pick to be their new coach.
J.J. Redick quickly became the favorite candidate in the public eye given his ties to LeBron James.
However, he was viewed as an unconventional, perhaps unwise hire to some, and it appears the Lakers might feel the same way.
Dan Hurley, the current head coach for UConn’s men’s basketball team, has had a few interviews lately.
Adrian Wojnarowski recently wrote an article on the latest in the hiring process, outlining Hurley’s thoughts on the Lakers’ approach.
“In a phone interview Sunday, Hurley told ESPN that he left “extremely impressed” with Lakers VP and GM Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss,” Wojnarowski said.
Hurley seems interested in the job based on his initial comments, so it will be interesting to see what his timeline looks like moving forward.
The Lakers might be looking to act quickly here, hoping to get their new coach implemented as soon as possible, especially considering the NBA Draft is coming up on June 26th and 27th.
This could be a pivotal draft for the Lakers, and they’ll want a new coach in place to help them figure out their best options for this roster.
