Despite a slightly unorthodox delivery, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders issued a statement about the struggle other teams will face to throw the football against the Buffaloes.
On Saturday, Sanders raved about his secondary and dubbed the group one of the most improved positions from the previous season.
“I feel pretty darn good,” Sanders said. “Throwing the football against us is going to be a problem. You can see the secondary has been upgraded as well. The back end, the safeties, they’re as physical as ever. Shilo is doing his thing. Cam’Ron is doing his thing. Trevor [Woods] is doing a wonderful job inside. Bentley is doing a wonderful job, as well as Jeremiah Brown, and so forth. Depth is a key ingredient that we have.”
While the Buffaloes are home to one of the nation’s best cornerbacks, Travis Hunter, Colorado’s pass defense was horrendous in 2023. The team surrendered the second-most total yards of any team in the Pac-12 with 453.3 YPG and the third-most passing yards per game with 276.9.
The defensive struggles were a large part of Colorado’s disappointing 4-8 season. With new challenges on the horizon as members of the Big 12 Conference, the 2024 season poses a whole new threat of air raid attacks for Colorado to manage.
Colorado’s secondary will be tested for the first time in 2024 on Thursday, August 29th, vs. North Dakota State.
