Diego Schwartzman suffered an unfortunate break ahead of his retirement as the Argentine reveals he was burglarized while he was practicing.
At the start of this week, the former world No. 8 hit the practice court in Argentina. When he returned to his car, the 32-year-old instantly noticed that the windows were smashed into and that some stuff was missing. After checking the car, the 2020 French Open semifinalist realized that the thieves pretty much didn’t leave anything behind.
“Get out of the court and everything stolen,” Schwartzman wrote in Spanish when sharing the photos from the scene.
Not the first time something similar happens to Schwartzman
Two years ago, the four-time ATP champion got robbed during his appearance at the ATP 250 in Eastbourne. But this case is probably more painful to the Argentine since it happened in his home country and just months before his final tournament in Buenos Aires.
After having a very rough 2023 season and also picking up seven consecutive defeats earlier this year, Schwartzman announced in May that he would call it a career next February on the clay courts of Buenos Aires.
“I want my last tournaments to be my own decision. May this 2024 be that way, hopefully having the opportunity to compete in the tournaments I enjoy the most. And in 2025, in Argentina, to be able to have my final moment, the most beautiful closing I can imagine,” the current world No. 366 wrote on social media in May.
In his message, he also paid a special tribute to tennis and vowed to give his best until his last tournament.
“Tennis ball, what can I say to you…? You made me run a lot, laugh, cry, travel and know many places. You gave me a lot and it’s time to move on to another stage. See you soon tennis, I’ll continue sweating until the last shot and working as a professional until the last point I’ll play on a tennis court, El Peque,” the 32-year-old also said at the time.
Schwartzman last played at the US Open, where he won three qualifying matches before losing to Gael Monfils in the first round.
