French Open Draw 2024 – Perfect Tennis

The 2024 French Open draw is here; so far, all the big names will be present. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are in there after their participation was in doubt, with both men suffering injuries during the lead-up.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic, who took a wildcard into Geneva to get some matches in his legs, enters as the top seed and will start against wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a battle of the non-transfected.

Fourteen-time champion Rafael Nadal has opted to play despite the clay swing not yielding the performances he would like. He starts against Sascha Zverev, not the type of start he hoped for.

Thoughts on the Draw

Top Quarter

Seeded players: Novak Djokovic (1), Casper Ruud (7), Taylor Fritz (12), Tommy Paul (14), Adrian Mannarino (22),  Francisco Cerundolo (23), Tomás Martín Etcheverry (28), Lorenzo Musetti (30).

Defending champion Novak Djokovic lands in the top half of the draw and starts his Paris campaign against French wild card Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Djoker is a three-time winner in Paris, but he’s yet to win a title this season. He entered Geneva this week to try to find some form.

Herbert will give a good account of himself, given that he will have the crowd on his side, but it looks like a relatively straightforward start for the top seed.

Novak is projected to face Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals, with the Norwegian starting against the dangerous Czech Jakub Mensik.

Djokovic could also potentially meet Lorenzo Musetti in the third round, whom he came from two sets to defeat in 2021, and Tommy Paul in the fourth round.

Djokovic’s Path the Title

Second Quarter

Sascha Zverev heads in as the 4th seed, starting with a blockbuster tie against Rafael Nadal in the first round. 

The pair haven’t met since Zverev was forced to retire in their 2022 French Open semi-final clash after he tore his ankle ligaments, an injury which kept him out for over six months.

In the second round, the winner will face another man who knows about ankle injuries sustained at Roland Garros, David Goffin or the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Holger Rune is a potential fourth-round opponent for Zverev, while Daniil Medvedev is seeded to meet him in the quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Russian starts against Dominik Koepfer, who can be a handful, and given Medvedev’s best showing at Roland Garros was a quarterfinal in 2021, it’s not easy to see him in the latter stages given his sub-par serving this year.

Zverev’s Path to the Final

Third Quarter

In the bottom half of the drop, Carlos Alcaraz lands in the third quarter and starts against a qualifier or a lucky loser.

Jack Draper will likely be his second-round opponent, and they’ve played some entertaining matches. Draper was able to match Alcaraz early but then pulled up lame when his lack of stamina caught up with him.

The Spaniard, who has been dealing with a persistent forearm injury, could encounter 15th seed Ben Shelton in the fourth round and Madrid champion Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals. Rublev starts his campaign against Japan’s Taro Daniel.

Alcaraz’s Path to the Final:

Bottom Quarter

Jannik Sinner’s participation in the French Open was questioned last month when he revealed that his hip injury was worse than first thought. However, after two weeks of rest, he’s back practising and is already at Roland Garros.

The Italian has been the strongest player of 2024, and with a good showing in Paris, could capture the world’s number one ranking. 

Sinner starts against Chris Eubanks, whose game doesn’t translate well onto clay or arguably onto any surface, given his recent form (4-9 this season), so that’s a comfortable-looking start.

Coric or Gasquet await in the second round, and it all looks manageable until the quarterfinals, where Hurkacz and Dimitrov are his seeded opponents.

The semi-finals could see an Alcaraz showdown, but Rublev and Tsitsipas may also have something to say about that, with both men capturing a Masters 1000 during the clay swing.
