Fritz Defeats Medvedev at 2024 ATP Finals in Turin
US Open Finalist Taylor Fritz opened up his campaign in styles at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, Italy on Sunday, defeating former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-3.
Needing one hour and 20 minutes to advance, Fritz used his confidence and rock-solid game from the baseline to oust his Russian opponent.
Slamming nine aces, winning 85 percent of his first serve points, hitting 21 winners and breaking serve on two occasions, Fritz improved to 1-0 in round robin play and 1-1 against Medvedev in lifetime meetings.
Medvedev, who won the ATP Finals in 2020, has yet to win a title in 2024. The 28-year-old has won 20 titles throughout his successful career.
He was visibly upset during his loss to Fritz; receiving a point penalty in the second set for breaking his racquet for the second time in the match.
The Russian will still have chances for victory this week, when he faces Alex de Minaur and top seed Jannik Sinner.
Later today, the home-town fans will have lots to cheer about when Sinner plays his first match against first-time ATP Finals competitor de Minaur.
De Minaur entered the field when defending champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the event.

Monday’s action in Turin will feature four-time Major winner Carlos Alcaraz in action against No. 6 seed Taylor Fritz.
Alcaraz, who has won four titles in 2024, hasn’t played his best tennis since winning his second-straight Wimbledon title. The 21-year-old will be looking to claim his first title at the year-end event this week.
Elsewhere, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev will take on good friend and No. 8 seed Andrey Rublev in Monday’s night session.
