Fritz, Dimitrov and Tiafoe Reach Third Round of Shanghai Masters

Monday’s action at the Rolex Shanghai Masters featured US Open finalist Taylor Fritz reaching the third round after defeating Terence Atmane 7-6(4), 7-6(5).

Needing two hours and two minutes to advance, Fritz used his powerful serve and groundstrokes to create 26 winners and six aces. The 26-year-old will next face Yosuke Watanuki for a shot at advancing to the round of 16.

Watanuki defeated No. 32 seed Brandon Nakashima earlier in the event.

Elsewhere, entertaining American Frances Tiafoe picked up a much-needed win on Monday, dismissing wildcard Yi Zhou 6-2, 6-4.

Other results on the day included No. 9 seed Grigor Dimitrov and No. 12 seed Holger Rune reaching the round of 32.

The heavy rain all week pushed a slew of matches indoors, and the conditions did not favour the seeded players.

David Goffin defeated No. 15 seed Lorenzo Musetti 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, Roman Safiullin ousted No. 23 seed Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-2, Marcos Giron upset No. 24 seed Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-3 and Tallon Griekspoor dispatched No. Jordan Thompson 6-3, 6-2.

Tuesday’s schedule in Shanghai will feature No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic and No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz.
