Gary O’Brien: My six selections for the Curragh on Saturday

The horse racing broadcaster provides his best bets across six races on Saturday.

CAMILLE PISSARRO

10/11

is likely to be a short price here and is difficult to oppose after his taking debut success at Navan. Plenty of Ballydoyle juveniles seem to have been needing their first runs but this Wootton Basset colt scored with real authority at Proudstown Park, though the form hasn’t exactly worked out well so far. Midnight Strike and Unexpected Issues also created very favourable impressions when scoring on their only start so this promises to be informative.

OCEAN QUEST

10/1

is in danger of becoming something of a cliff horse for me but I reckon it’s well worth giving Jessica Harrington’s charge another chance. The Sioux Nation filly was a beaten favourite on her seasonal debut at Naas but there was no disgrace in finishing second to Group 1 winner Moss Tucker, who was always better positioned through that Group 3 contest. She should at least make a bold bid to reverse that form now, and looks a big price based on the pick of her form last year.

An interesting contest, with La Isla Majures respected on her first start for Paddy Twomey and Sumiha likely to be popular after her unlucky defeat at Cork on her reappearance. My vote however goes to RAISE YOU

11/2

, who was very progressive two seasons ago and having missed all of last season shaped well on his return here last month. This return to a longer trip will be a major plus for him and he is entitled to improve with that outing under his belt.

ROSALLION

5/6

is clearly the one to beat, and with his main rival having stamina  to prove on his first try over a mile it will be disappointing if Richard Hannon’s stable star fails to go one better than in the British version. He looked the likely winner for much of the journey that day and Sean Levey may well deploy his mount’s turn of foot later this time. Like the favourite, River Tiber was a very smart juvenile and if he does stay the mile he looks the most likely threat. Rosallion’s stable-companion Haatem is a good horse in his own right and has solid each-way claims following his honourable third at Newmarket.

The likeable Crystal Black appeared to be carrying plenty of condition when scoring on his reappearance here so he seems sure to have a big say again off just a 4lb higher mark. Runner-up Earls has already boosted that form. The Conyngham Lodge duo are both worth keeping an eye on with the future in mind but LADY LUNETTE

20/1

might be the best outsider on this occasion. Ray Cody’s mare hasn’t been at her best on unsuitable ground in two starts this term but she is back on her last winning mark and now has conditions in her favour.

defied serious market weakness when making the perfect start for Ross O’Sullivan at today’s venue last month and can follow up. Eclipse Emerald and Kortez Bay, the French import’s immediate victims on that occasion, went on to dominate a premier handicap at Naas so he may well have got away lightly in being left on the same mark.
