‘He Could Be a Top Quarterback in the Nation’

Preview magazine season is here as we roll into the back half of June, and college football fans begin to set their eyes on what will come in the year ahead.

Along with Phil Steele and Lindy’s, Athlon Sports has made a name for itself as one of the giants in the preview magazine business, cementing itself as a mainstay on grocery store shelves across the nation.

This magazine, in particular, has long had a segment during this part of the season when they ask coaches anonymously about the other schools in their league.

It’s here where we’ll take a look at what one Big 12 coach has to say about West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene.

The junior signal caller was thrust into the starting lineup early in the season after emerging victorious in an offseason quarterback battle with Nicco Marchiol.

He posted impressive numbers in his junior campaign, leading the Mountaineers to a 9-4 season, which was capped off with a win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

“It’s hard to tell how much they’ve turned the corner,” one Big 12 coach said. “A lot of that depends on if they can help Garrett Greene elevate. He could be a top quarterback in the nation if there’s support around him.”

Greene is entering his fifth year at West Virginia and is expected to step onto the field as one of the league’s top quarterbacks. As a junior in 2023, the Florida native posted a new career-high 75.8 quarterback rating, good for 20th in the nation.

In addition to his stellar performance ratings, Greene posted 147 completions for 2,406 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 16-4. He also added 120 carries for 772 yards and 13 scores on the ground.

Should Greene take yet another step forward in the upcoming season, West Virginia could be on a crash course headed straight for Arlington.

West Virginia will open the 2024 season against Penn State on Saturday, August 31. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT, and coverage will be provided on FOX.
